The British Chess Championships at Scarborough featured a range of events in a ddition to the main event.

These events allowed everyone to enter a competition with an opportunity to win. Several York players took part.

Tim Turner was joint winner of Week Two's One-Round-a-Day Open with four points.

Barry Marshall competed in both weeks Two-Rounds-a-Day competitions.He scored 5 points in an open section and 5 points in a graded section. Steve Webster played in Week Two's lower graded section and scored four points.

Webster won the unofficial title of playing most games at the championships as he had entered the Under-100 British Championship in the first week, scoring 3 points from five games and he also entered the Yates Weekend Tournament for players graded under 110. In the Yates Webster scored four points.

In the Under-150 British Championship John Cawston scored three points from five games. In the Under-175 Jon Griffith scored two points from five games.

York had three players in the Under-125 British Championship with Laurence Cornhill coming came joint third with four points from five games, only losing to the winner.

Neville Pearce scored 2 points from his five games and John Knowles scored two points from three games before withdrawing due to work commitments.

In the veterans section Don Baldwin scored 3 points from seven games and former York player David Smith scored three points.

At the other end of the age range, Patrick Gower scored 3 points from seven games in the Under-14 British Championship.

In the middle of the Championships there was a six round rapidplay competition and seven players from York entered. Tim Turner scored four points, John Blades 2, and Neville Pearce, Jon Griffith, Peter Cloudsdale, Laurence Cornhill and Sri Sriharan all scored two points.
