A LANDOWNER with a vision for the future of York's Castle area has hung out a huge banner, advertising his idea, over the River Foss.
Martin Burgess, who owns property along the top end of Piccadilly, says his Castle Quarter proposal would provide "a truly viable alternative" to Land Securities' plans for the Coppergate Riverside development.
The banner hangs from one of his buildings, and claims the proposal is a "radical vision" for the future, providing a mix of housing, retail and leisure facilities, rather than focusing on shops, as the Coppergate plan does.
"We have had some fantastic responses to this alternative," said Mr Burgess.
"They have come from businesses, tourist bodies and many individuals. We now want anyone else who has strong feelings about this to come and see the leaflets we have on offer, explaining what this is about."
Mr Burgess wants all opponents of the Coppergate Riverside plan to write to the planning inspectorate to voice their views, ahead of a public inquiry into the proposals which begins on September 24.
"We believe that the Land Securities plan turns its back on Piccadilly, and on the Castle Museum, both of which are integral parts of the city of York.
"This plan offers a mix of uses, and crucially, public open space. This city could become as beautiful and attractive as somewhere like Dublin; it just takes a bit of alternative thinking."
From today until Tuesday, interested parties can get hold of a copy of the leaflet explaining the Castle Quarter plan from Greens Furniture World on Piccadilly.
Mr Burgess says his next step will be to discuss the plans closely with City of York Council.
