MEANDER along York's riverside, enjoy the view, and join in a massive fundraising effort to raise money for the Lord Mayor of York's charities.

York's Millennium Bridge will be the starting point for a family walk in September to raise money for York's Age Concern and St Leonard's Hospice.

A six-mile walk along the bridges and riverside paths on the River Ouse are the route for the first Lord Mayor's "meander".

The walk is designed for anybody, of any age or fitness, to join in and takes place on Sunday, September 23.

The Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Irene Waudby, said: "The riverside walks from Fulford to Clifton go through both town and country and offer some of the best views of the city, as well as peaceful rural rambles.

"Many walkers, cyclists and runners already know parts of the route, but now that we have the Millennium Bridge there is an opportunity for an easy, six-mile circuit that can be started at any stage and suitable for both young and old.

"We should like to invite as many people as possible to join us for the first Lord Mayor's Meander to explore our magnificent riverside walks and enjoy the fresh air of the countryside in the very heart of our city."

There will be stewards at each of the six bridges on the route and people can join in at any bridge and choose how far they wish to "meander". The Millennium Bridge will be the official finish where special certificates will be given out to those taking part.

To enter collect a coupon from the council's leisure venues or from the charity shops concerned.
