BUSINESSES in the York area have been quick to respond to the challenge of this year's competition for the Queen's Awards for Enterprise.
The Queen's Awards Office says that 26 local businesses have so far applied for details of the 2002 awards, which will be given for exceptional achievements in international trade, innovation and sustainable development.
Secretary David Moore said: "We're delighted by this response from the firms of the York area, and hope that other local businesses will also rise to the challenge.
"Over the years, Yorkshire and the Humber has produced many worthy winners, including six winners of the 2001 awards.
The awards are open to businesses of all kinds which can show impressive growth, and which have at least two employees.
They are not only for large companies; 32 per cent of last year's awards were won by companies with under 50 employees.
The closing date for applications is October 31. For details, ring 0870 513 4486, or visit the website at www.queensawards.org.uk
