GANTON GC will next week resound to the shots of some of the world's finest young golfers when it stages the prestigious Boys' Amateur Championship.

In the past the event has been won by the likes of such stars as Jos Maria Olazabal, his Spanish compatriot Sergio Garcia - both Ryder Cup stars - and Irishman Ronan Rafferty.

Now a total of 256 players from no less than the cream of 31 nations, including an entrant from Russia, will descend on the championship-rated north Yorkshire course for the tournament, which will start on Monday before concluding with the 36-hole final a week today.

Among the favourites for the crown this year is Switzerland's Raphael de Sousa, who just last month won the English Boys' strokeplay championship at Moor Park with a 14-under-par total of 274.

Among a strong English contingent is Daniel Wardrop, who starred for England in the recent European Boys' Team Championship played in Poland.
