ANOTHER junior success was sampled at Cocksford GC at Tadcaster, where junior member John Austwick potted a hole in one.
The 13-year-old was marking a card for an adult member playing in the Sykes Trophy when, teeing off on the 198-yard par three 15th hole, his playing partner Darren Sheridan said : "Let's see who can get nearest the pin."
The hole requires an uphill drive to the green, which cannot be seen from the tee. On getting to the green John could not see his ball. Darren told him to look in the hole and there it was.
It is only two years ago that John started playing with an hour lesson on a Sunday under the wing of club professional Graham Thompson. Victory in a nine-hole junior competition earned him six months junior membership and soon after he had his first handicap of 28.
Last year he won the award for the most improved player in the club having reduced his handicap by ten down to 18. Another three shots have been trimmed from his handicap as he aims to be off single figures by the end of the summer.
PANNAL GC professional David Padgett, the one-time Heworth pro', won the Yorkshire PGA pro-am at Fulford.
He carded a five-under-par 67 to finish one ahead of Adrian Ambler (Walton), who is the new Yorkshire PGA champion.
A FINE nett 65 from Pete Rennison enabled him to win Forest Park GC's August medal ahead of John Riley and Joe Barrett. The Ladies' Golf Union medal 7 event was won by Barbara Flaherty with a nett 71.
JOE Buckley retained the Harrogate Union junior title with a 72 at Pannal, two shots ahead of the host club's Martin Padgett. Ben Hacker, a 14-year-old from Oakdale, had a superb nett 56 off his handicap of 31 to win his handicap section.
THE York GC's annual scratch competition over 36 holes will have to go to a play-off after D Holder and H Jackson tied for first place with two-round totals of 143. Holder posted rounds of 73 and 70 with Jackson carding 71 and 72.
Malton and Norton GC's quartet of Jean Mackenzie, Janet Rushworth, Judy Butler and Pat Hague sailed into the last 16 of the Mail On Sunday competition after beating Seahouses on home ground.
