THERE is a great deal of unease among people in North Yorkshire about the fact that licences are being granted for grouse-shooting where footpaths are closed.

For example: we hear from Mr Winn-Darley, who owns Spaunton Moor, that his shoots are going ahead and it is "great news" (pity about the footpaths) - but the shoots bring in "thousands of pounds".

Apart from the fact that walkers bring in rather more than thousands of pounds over the season, we have the ethics and morals issue.

It is quite simply - Germans, Italians, Americans and other wealthy parties are going to be treading where English people cannot go.

How can this be allowed? Where is the sense in it? Perhaps you feel that foot and mouth will not be spread by grouse-shooters. Then neither will it be spread by walkers!
