I STRONGLY support Mr Bayley's efforts to secure the much-needed improvements to York railway station (August 1).
In addition to those deficiencies mentioned, the public address system is totally inadequate, the monitors and departure board are often misleading and unreadable in strong sunlight, the subway is badly maintained and smelly.
American tourists I encountered recently in this area - when the lift actually stuck - unfortunately left our city with a bad impression and, to my embarrassment, they told me so.
Leeds and Newcastle stations, both recently modernised, have received large sums of money.
It is disgraceful that perhaps the finest station of all in such a major tourist centre should be lagging behind where it matters most.
We should no longer be obliged to apologise to our visitors and we should all welcome our MP's initiative and hope it succeeds sooner rather than later.
Richard O Whiting,
Redman Close,
York.
