York College student Adam Lee will be hoping for better luck than last year when he competes at the English Schools Athletics Championships in Exeter this week.
Lee, 17, from Selby, suffered injury on his first throw in last year's event and will want to do better this time round when he again represents the North Yorkshire region at under-18s (Senior Boys) level starting tomorrow and through until Sunday.
Lee, who is currently studying for 'A' Levels in Geography and Physics and is hoping to study Computing and Critical Thinking next year, is also a keen rugby player, and only took up javelin throwing 18 months ago.
He said: "I hope to better my performance this year."
NETBALL
Joseph Rowntree's girls have again excelled.
Their under-14 team of Emily Fowler (captain), Sarah McQuade, Michelle McQuade, Katie Ellis, Heather Welsh, Katie Caffrey, Kathryn Cordell, Jenni Bailey, Charlotte Tattersall and Georgina Roberts recently travelled to the Redbridge Sports Centre in Essex for the national netball finals.
They won four games on their way to finishing fourth in section one, which placed them eighth in England - the highest a Jo-Ro U14 netball team has ever achieved.
The team got their challenge underway with a fine 10-7 win over Croydon before losing to Wirrall Girls GS 8-5 and Broxbourne 9-8, two teams who went on to reach the semi-finals.
They also beat Farringdon 11-7, Carfe Hills 12-8 and Higham High School 7-6 while losing to Crestwood 7-6 and Nottingham 13-7.
Michelle McQuade was voted player of the tournament by team-mates, spectators and parents.
Katie Caffrey was among six York girls who attended the first England netball talent camp.
The others were Helen Birdsall, Marion Willis, Nicola Bailey and Emily Fowler (all Joseph Rowntree) and Claire Gillick (All Saints).
Bailey, Caffrey and Gillick have been asked to attend a further camp on July 14 and 15 at Leeds University.
