York's first open-air concert and fireworks display is to take place on Knavesmire this summer in a Last Night of the Proms extravaganza.
The event, featuring The Midland Symphony Orchestra, will be at the racecourse on Saturday, September 8, at 7pm.
John Reid, leader of the orchestra and promoter, said: "We have chosen York Racecourse because it is a beautiful setting with easy access to good car parks close to the concert area.
"Our concerts attract up to 15,000 people, and we expect this one to be very popular."
Although he would not disclose how much was being spent on the fireworks display, he did say: "The spectacle will light up the sky - people from all over the city will be able to see the fireworks.
"We spend too much on them - but it makes the concert even more wonderful."
Iain Sutherland will conduct the concert of romantic classics.
Tickets are priced at £17.50 in advance or £20 on the day. For children under 16, tickets are £9 in advance and £10 on the day. For tickets ring 01952 616133.
