An elderly man who died following a road accident on the A170 in Ryedale may have fallen ill at the wheel, police said today.

John Speight, from Batley, in West Yorkshire, was pronounced dead on arrival at Scarborough District Hospital after the accident, which happened at 2pm on Saturday near the Kirkbymoorside roundabout.

His wife, Shirley, who was a passenger in the couple's maroon-coloured Nissan Primera, was not injured. The accident occurred when Mr Speight's vehicle, which was heading west, partially collided with a grey Peugeot 306 heading in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Peugeot 306, Susan Lowe and her three passengers, all escaped injury.

The road was partially closed for two hours after the accident and police are not appealing for witnesses.
