THIS school pupil is joining in a sponsored walk this weekend in celebration that his broken leg has mended and his cast has been removed.

Matthew Glenton, 12, a pupil at Lowfield School, in Acomb, broke his leg earlier this year while playing football.

Matthew had his leg plastered at York District Hospital in a cast in the colours of his favourite team - Leeds United.

The orthopaedic department in York was happy to carry out his unusual colour-theme request and let Matthew receive a special signed football on behalf of the hospital.

This will now be raffled off at the Minster Mile event, tomorow afternoon, to raise money for the Wishbone Trust and York District Hospital.

Staff and former patients will be walking the Minster Mile which involves three circuits around York Minster totaling one mile.

York District Hospital NHS Trust raises funds for orthopaedic education and research and, as on the previous two walks around the Minster in 1997 and 1999, half the funds raised will be available for local projects at York District Hospital and half to support nation-wide projects chosen by the Wish bone Trust committee.

Tony Gibbon, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at York District Hospital, and chairman of the walk committee said: "Our patients have been extremely supportive of previous Wishbone walks generating substantial sums, enabling us to set up a pre-assessment service for our joint replacement patients as well as creating a well-equipped study area for our trainees."

"We encourage former patients of any age to join us on what, if previous experience is repeated, will be an enjoyable afternoon."
