LOCATED on the first floor of Browns department store, you have to run the gauntlet of the bed section before erupting into this twin-level eating spot. The venue doubles as a sophisticated dining room or an attractive place to have a snack.

The decor is plain. We take in plain walls, black tables and very modern yet surprisingly comfortable chairs.

Menus are handed out when customers are seated and removed once an order has been placed. From our table we could see two chefs busy at work in what has almost become a compulsory open kitchen.

The menu offered such things as devilled whitebait, sausage and mash, pan-fried chicken breast or tuna steaks. We had to remind ourselves that we were there for a snack!

Ann fancied the unusual triple decker of banana, peanut butter, jam and yoghurt served in chocolate bread (£3.95) and drooled until it arrived. Oh dear! They had brought quite the wrong thing. It took another five minutes to sort things out. At last Ann got her teeth into what turned out to be a delicious combination.

My choice was smoked salmon, brie and avocado in a baguette straight from the oven (£4.95). I was not disappointed but would argue strongly that the baguette had not come straight from the oven. Why advertise it as such and how, when the venue was really quiet, could the chef make an error with Ann's order?

There were many vegetarian options, pasta, salads and sandwiches.

Nearly all the light bites were priced within our £5.75 budget. Even a gourmet sandwich of bacon and marmalade would qualify.

There was lack of intimacy as the tables were spread out.

But we did like the china which was manufactured in Luxembourg.
