Yorkshire had to be cruel to be kind at Bradford Park Avenue yesterday when they thrashed Bradford-Leeds Universities' Centre of Excellence by an innings and 186 runs well before tea on the second day, writes David Warner.
It was a massacre for the students who were shot out for 74 in just 30 overs after Yorkshire had declared at lunch on 389 for five with a first innings lead of 260, Michael Lumb hitting his maiden century for the county.
Although Yorkshire showed no mercy on their youthful opponents they played the game properly and the Centre's players were adamant that they had learned a great deal from the experience.
Yorkshire skipper David Byas commented: "It has been a good exercise all round because we have got in some useful batting and bowling practice in match conditions and the students have seen the difference which currently exists between our level and theirs.
"But it will have been a good learning curve for them and they will be much the better for it.
"I admire the positive way they approached the game and also for not being afraid to bat first after they had won the toss."
