Tea and cakes will take on another dimension at the hospice community fun day later this month - they will be made of pure sponge and icing and not a drop of the hot stuff in sight.
A special raffle prize at the event will be a tea service made from cake, specially made and decorated by hospice volunteer Audrey Dennis.
The community fun day takes place on Saturday, June 30, at York College in Tadcaster Road and all funds raised will go towards the final countdown for the St Leonard's Hospice 2000 Appeal. The cake is just one in a series of spectacular cakes that Audrey has made over the years to raise money for charities including St Leonard's, and the raffle tickets for them always sell - like hot cakes!
As well as being a volunteer at St Leonard's shop at Acomb, York, Audrey has another special hospice link - her daughter, Judith Metcalfe, is a community fundraiser for the hospice. Judith said: "Since I was little I've enjoyed my mum's cakes - and now everyone has a chance of sampling one, and helping the hospice raise funds for our appeal, too."
The event is open from noon to 4pm and has stalls and attractions including live music from Copy Cats and student bands, arts and crafts, a barbecue, bouncy castle, refreshments, kids fun fair, line dancing, and cream teas.
Donations for the final countdown can be sent to the St Leonard's fundraising office at 14 York Road, Acomb, York, YO24 4LU, or drop off in an envelope marked for the attention of Emma Harrison, St Leonard's Hospice 2000 Appeal, at the front desk of the Evening Press in Walmgate.
Or you can call in to one of the shops in Fourth Avenue Tang Hall, The Village, Haxby, Waterloo Lane, Pocklington and York Road, Acomb.
If you are organising or taking part in any activities in the coming weeks to raise money for the appeal contact Emma Harrison in the Evening Press newsroom on 01904 653051 ext 314 or e-mail on emma.harrison@ycp.co.uk
