Q I exercise three times a week: circuits, aerobics or step classes, and do the stomach exercises the instructors give. I've got a slim body but my stomach and waist are still chubby. Any suggestions?
A Firstly, let's not get too obsessed about the size of your stomach. If you are exercising regularly at a reasonable intensity then you are achieving the object - to keep healthy and enjoy your fitness. However, I guess your problem is more to do with posture and technique. Ask your regular instructor to check your sit-up technique which may need correcting.
You need exercises that target core body strength, focusing on the deep abdominal and pelvic muscles. An experienced instructor will help you achieve this and classes such as pilates or body balance will build core strength, improve posture and ultimately guard against the back problems that come with poor alignment.
Courtney's gym at Monk's Cross is now the only centre in the area offering body balance classes. Phone 01904 642162 for more information.
