WORK started last week in North Yorkshire on a new video demonstrating measures farmers can take to control the spread of foot and mouth disease.
The agriculture ministry says it is continuing to stress the importance of biosecurity measures because, from discussions, it appears some farmers misunderstand the measures to be taken.
Although the disease is on the decline in some areas of the country, it remains of vital importance that farmers continue to carry out disease control measures for their own benefit, as well as for that of the wider rural community, stated the ministry press release.
"We recognise the efforts that farmers have already taken but more needs to be done," said chief veterinary officer Jim Scudamore. "The advice remains to prevent contact between different groups of livestock and carry out at all times the most rigorous cleansing and disinfection of yourselves, equipment and vehicles.
"Ensure necessary visitors to your stock, such as tanker drivers and delivery lorries, also undertake the same rigorous cleansing and disinfection on arrival and departure."
Further guidance on biosecurity measures can be found on the ministry website at www.maff.gov.uk.
