THE Unique Pub Co has again teamed up with the Evening Press to run a player of the year competition for York City's first team.

Defensive titan Chris Fairclough won the award last season due to a string of fine displays before Christmas, but only time will tell if the 36-year-old, currently out with a knee injury, can successfully defend his title.

The competition has a different format this season, designed to add to the interest and keep the result in doubt until the end.

Rather than averaging out players' marks out of ten, we will award three points to City's man of the match each game.

The second best player will receive two points and the third best one point, and those points will be totted up during the year.

As well as the annual trophy, the winner will again be awarded £350 courtesy of Unique Pub Co, while the runner-up will receive £150.

The early leader in the table is midfielder Steve Agnew, who was City's man of the match against Chesterfield and was second best against Cheltenham and Barnet.

Wayne Hall is close behind, having been the man of the match against both Barnet and Stoke, while super Alan Fettis also has six points.
