Dave Wright, of Armley Angling team, won the Abu-backed Spring League at Carpvale, as I predicted he would.

His sixth place in the 40-peg final round consolidated his place at the top of the league.

Wright's 20 point total secured him £400, plus an Abu Agenda pole. If the sections fit his Abu Ambassadeur he should be up to about 40 metres by now.

Victory on the day went to Steve Howard (Headingley Angling) from peg five. Fishing a groundbait feeder packed with pellets and shredded meat he cast tight to the islands with meat on the hook netting a dozen carp for 51lb 12oz.

Gary Watson (Leeds) won a peg to peg battle with Mick Laverack (Leeds) on 34 and 33 respectively. Watson fished pole and corn to net 8 carp scaling 31lb 8oz while Laverack was a fish short on 28lb 4oz.

Others: Andy Gallant (Armley Angling) 27-8-0, Terry Carlton (Acomb Tackle) 24-10-0, Dave Wright (Armley Angling) 21-0-0.

The minor placings in the league went to Steve Bowyer (The Army) 22 points, £300 plus Abu rod; Gary Watson (Leeds) 25 points, £200 plus Abu Luggage; Dave Maddison (York) 26 points, £100 plus Abu nets package.

A total of £260 was also raised for Beeston Junior Football Club.

The final round of the Spring Series at the Willows saw 53 tackle Goldrush and Ridge Pool. Weights were down on recent weeks but the top ten still recorded 20lb or more and less than a pound separated the top three.

Dave Ward (Dick Clegg Ossett) led from peg 52, where he fished pellet and maggot for 27lb 14oz of carp to 4lb plus chub, ide and tench.

His teammate Mick Lodge was close by on 56 and used the same attack for his 27lb8oz bag of carp, ide, tench, chub and skimmers.

The consistent John Cyrowski (Armley Angling) fished pellet and caster at 49 for 27lb 4oz of chub, carp, ide and orfe.

Others: Stan Haigh (Anglers World) and Stan Jeffries (Armley Angling) both 25-5-0, Dave Armitage (Hirst Tackle) 21-14-0.

The series went to Keith Gray (Anglers World) with 13 points. He picked up a Shimano pole and £200.

Other prize winners were: John Cyrowski 15 points, £270; Dave Armitage 17 points £220; Steve Beckwith (The Willows) 18 points £130; Keith Mitchell (Selby) 20 points, £80.

Wednesday's 39-entry match at Woodlands was switched to the old lakes, with good results.

Doug Smith (MAP Elton) fished pole and corn tight into the corner on Dragonfly 21 for his all carp 83lb 14oz that included fish to double figures.

Roger Holmes (MAP Elton) took second from Swallow peg eight with 76lb 5oz of carp on pellet and meat at 16 metres.

Others: Bill Blythe (Newman Scotts) 61-3-0, Darryl Taylor (MAP Elton) 60-6-0, Bill Sharp (Leeds) 54-15-0, Paul Taylor (MAP Elton) 51-7-0.

Saturday and Sunday saw 68 contesting a two day festival. Each day was split into two contests on old and new lakes, with anglers swapping for the second day.

Nobody came close to John Chapman (Keenets NW), who won his lake on both days. Drawn on Swallow 13 on Saturday he topped the "old" section with 65lb 1oz of carp and tench taken on pole and corn at 15 metres.

The following day on Partridge 12 it was the old yellow peril that stuck again with him alternating the kernels at 3 and 11 metres for 42lb 4oz of small carp and another perfect score.

Other lake winners were: Saturday New; Dave Pimlott (Keenets Elton) 45-10-0

Sunday Old: Mark Calvert (Newman Scotts) 48-7-0

Overall: John Chapman (Keenets NW) 2 points, Dave Pimlott (Keenets Elton) 5pts, Ian Bowman (Barnsley) and Mark Calvert (Newman Scotts) both 9pts (Bowman won on weight 80-7-0 to 77-12-0), Phil Sellars (MAP Elton) 12pts.
