IT was good to see York City president and Ryedale MP John Greenway come out fighting for the Minstermen and other lower League clubs this week.
Greenway took centre-stage in the Independent on Sunday as the broadsheet focused on his capabilities as the Tory spokesman for sport.
Dubbed 'The Shadow who is ready to box', Greenway didn't waste the opportunity to make his feelings clear on the pending transfer revolution detailed in the Evening Press last month.
"If it goes through there will be a fire sale of every good 23-year-old player in the land. That's not good enough. It would be a disaster for York and clubs like them," he said.
City chairman Douglas Craig is also still keeping up the fight.
Craig, who last month reasoned the region could become a footballing desert should the threat to the transfer become real, this week revealed he has written to every MEP for the North East and Humber-side warning of the danger.
Greenway has taken slightly more direct action - making good his vow to visit Brussels and deliver in person an icy blast to the European Commissioners leading the charge for change.
Greenway noted that while Europe's lawmakers consulted FIFA and UEFA, most clubs in the lower divisions were being kept in the dark on developments.
Sensibly, he believes an in-depth inquiry is needed to assess just how damaging the abolition of the transfer system will be for football's minnows.
Whatever the outcome of the transfer changes - a verdict is expected by the end of the year - it is good to know Third Division clubs, and particularly York City, have some heavyweight political backing championing their cause.
HIGH-fives for York City's Worthington Fives, who are through to the quarter-finals of a national amateur five-a-side competition after seeing off Premiership opposition.
The City supporters' team beat Aston Villa 6-3 in last Sunday's third round tie in Nottingham. They will now play Kidderminster Harriers on November 26 in the quarter-finals.
Victory against the Harriers will earn the City side a semi-final spot in the New Year with the final to be played as a curtain-raiser to the Worthington Cup final in February.
The five-a-side champions will receive an all-expense paid trip to Europe.
THE rain has put paid to York City Ladies' big day at Bootham Crescent tomorrow.
Their match with Hull, scheduled to kick-off at 1pm, has been postponed due to the pitch being unplayable. A new date has yet to be arranged.
THE new, limited edition York City blue shirt is now available in the Bootham Crescent club shop for supporters who have placed orders.
A few extra ones are in stock and up for grabs but in adult sizes only.
