THE best in the west was the top showing for Kirkbymoorside Golf Club duo Steve Jackson and Paul Gardner.
The crackshot duo won the Yorkshire Rabbits Golf Association's Thorton Trophy at Halifax West End GC. It was only the second time in the event's 63-year history that the trophy had gone to a club outside the borders of west Yorkshire. Coincidentally, the first such distinction was achieved by Kirkbymoorside two years ago.
A total of 130 Yorkshire clubs were represented on a thunderstorm-interrupted day. But Jackson's nett 64 and a nett 70 from Gardner enabled them to reign supreme. And there was an added bonus. Jackson's stunning total also secured him the Fred Brown salver.
A SEASIDE special was sampled by Malton and Norton GC professional Steve Robinson.
He romped to the first prize of £2,000 in the Seaside tournament at Bridlington, where he blitzed five birdies to finish on a fine four-under-par 68.
Robinson finished three shots ahead of his nearest rivals, who included The York's Simon Appleton, while one shot further back on 72 was Andrew Turner from Knaresborough.
GERRY Wilson and Ken George were the first winners of a new annual stableford trophy donated by past Kilnwick Percy GC lady captain Jean Forster in memory of her husband David, who died last year.
A founder member of the senior section, David Forster was a popular member of the club.
Meanwhile, Matthew Burrows and Tom Rastall enjoyed their debuts for the East Riding at Driffield, where they lost their pairs 4 and 3, but rallied to each win their individual afternoon games against Leeds Golf Union rivals.
The club's invitation day was won by Richard Craven and S Clough on 41 points ahead of Peter Wright and D Hornsey (38) and Richard B Jarvis and D Holtby (37).
In the Scratch league Matthew Burrows, Jordan McNeil and Kevin Beattie beat visitors Skidby Lakes 2-1, while in an inter-club friendly Cottingham won by a narrow margin at hosts Kilnwick.
FOR the fifth year Flamborough Head GC is to host the Amken Classic, a charity golf competition in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief.
This year's event - a better-ball Stableford with entry open to men's, ladies and mixed pairs - will be on July 20, starting at 10am.
Up for grabs is the first prize of a three day/two night golf break for two people including bed, breakfast, dinner and three days golf donated by Hunley Hall Golf Club.
There will also be prizes of framed golf gloves, autographed by Ryder Cup ace Lee Westwood, for the longest drive and nearest the pin contests.

In third place on a count-back of the back six holes were Don Fairclough, Marie Fairclough, John Enos and Gay Enos, who totalled 76 points alongside fourth-placed Richard Masefield, Mary Masefield, Mike Meynell and Angela Meynell.
MALTON and Norton GC's Bank Holiday Texas Scramble produced the best score of 54.4 nett from Colin and Pat Robinson, Rachel Thomas and Mark Johnson. The runners-up were Pete and Max Bailey and Lee and Sue Bellion with a nett 56.8.
Pat Robinson and Rachel Thomas won the silver and bronze division prizes respectively in the Lady Vice-Captain's day event.
ALLERTHORPE Park's monthly medal wound its way along a testing route 66.
Richard Barker and John H Smith both tied on nett 66, but the spoils went to Barker, who edged home on a count-back.
The midweek medal was won by Steve Russell with a nett 60 - two shots ahead of David Morris.
Tony Dale won the second qualifying round in Fulford's club championship with a four-under-par 68 on count-back from Trevor Whurr. Former York champion Kevin Miller had the best gross of 73, trimming his handicap from three to two.
JOHN Innes defied gusty conditions to fire an excellent 68 and claim Forest Park GC's June medal. Wayne Pendall posted a 76 to win the lowest overall gross.
