A HERO camper pulled a drowning man from the River Ouse in York today and revived him when he stopped breathing.

Paul Smith, who was camping near the Millennium Bridge, came to the rescue after a 30-year-old York man slipped from a rope swing over the river near the bottom of Maple Grove and plunged into the water at about 4.30am.

The man, who police said had also been camping on the river front with his student girlfriend, at first swam across the river's west bank, but as he swam back he got into difficulty. His girlfriend tried to pull him out of the water from the bank, but could not manage to get him out.

Mr Smith rushed to help and the man was eventually pulled out of the water, but then stopped breathing.

He was given the kiss of life by Mr Smith and began breathing again.

He was taken to York District Hospital by ambulance and was discharged this morning.
