Bridge the safety gap
I WELCOME J C Potter's views on the need for pedestrian footbridges in the
Recent hotel, restaurant and garage developments along this section of the A64 have been to serve motorists, but they also require staffing.
Some employees will wish to use the Coastliner buses, which provide a regular service from York, Tadcaster and other centres. But they will then have to cross the road either before starting or after finishing their work.
Such prospects are quite alarming, particularly at the end of a shift when the next bus may be due.
Now contrast the situation with the Esk Valley Railway at Grosmont. Here there is a single line railway carrying just four trains each way a day all travelling very slowly as they approach or leave the station. Yet a footbridge to connect the National Park car park with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on the other side of the line has just been opened.
If this solution can be achieved at Grosmont it should be used to remedy the far more dangerous situation at Bilbrough Top, with elegant modern structures to suit the location.
