A young East Yorkshire pair got criminal convictions and a £270 court bill each when they made a trip to York.

Barry Blackburn, 20, and Rachel Westmoreland, 18, both stole from HMV in Coney Street, on Saturday said Steven Ovenden, prosecuting.

Each claimed the other knew nothing about their crime.

When they appeared before York magistrates, both faced resentencing for Pocklington offences as well as their thefts.

Blackburn, of Willow Court, Pocklington, pleaded guilty to stealing a box of music cassettes worth £15.99 in York and breaching a conditional discharge imposed in East Yorkshire for being drunk and disorderly in March.

Westmoreland, of The Oval, Pocklington, admitted stealing a £15.99 music CD in York and breaching a discharge for assaulting a woman in a pub toilet in Pocklington.

Magistrates fined each £150 plus £120 court costs.

For the defendants, Mark Thompson said the York thefts were opportunistic. Westmoreland's victim had attacked her before she grabbed her by the hair and pulled her to the ground, he said.
