YORK youngsters are being given the chance to represent the city at the North Yorkshire Youth Games this summer.

A big programme of coaching sessions in a wide range of sports has been organised by City of York Council's York Leisure department.

At the end of these coaching programmes squads will be selected to represent York at the NY Youth Games at Granby High School, Harrogate, on June 24.

The sports involved are athletics, boys' and girls' basketball, kwik cricket, disability sports, boys' moderate learning disabilities football, girls' under-14s and under-11s football, boys' and girls' hockey, netball, orienteering, girls' under-14 and mixed under-11s tag rugby, table tennis, tennis.

Those who can take part in the courses for each sport vary from school years 5 up to 9.

A wide range of venues all over the city are being used and each sport has a weekly session on a set evening.

The cost to take part in the coaching sessions varies from 50p a session for some sports to £2 a session for others. Some coaching courses have already begun.

FOOTBALL

Copmanthorpe triumphed in the Selby and District Primary Schools Girls' five-a-side football tournament.

Their 'A' team beat Longmans Hill 'A' 3-2 in the final.

They had topped their group, winning three and drawing one of their four matches, while the Copmanthorpe 'B' team finished runners-up in their group, missing out on making it an all-Copmanthorpe final by one point.

Emma Coates was Copmanthorpe's top scorer, netting seven of their 11 goals.

Other teams who took part in the tournament were Riccall, Selby College, Hambleton and Barlby.

Copmanthorpe's girls also won the under-12 competition in the first ladies football fun day run by City of York Council and North Riding County FA's GOAL (Girls' Opportunities At All Levels) Initiative.

YORK City's Bootham Crescent ground is to host several York Schools football finals on Saturday, May 12 at Bootham Crescent.

The programme is: 10.15am ko, U16 Lowfield v Burnholme; 10.45am ko U11 semi-finals; 12.30pm ko, U14 All Saints v Tadcaster; 2pm ko, U11 final; 2.30pm ko, U15 Barlby v Fulford. Admission adults £2, children £1.

TENNIS

ST Peter's School, York, are celebrating their first ever victory over the York University Men's team.

The annual fixture has been played for ten years but it is the first time the pupils have beaten the students.

St Peter's, who were unbeaten last season, won 9-3 with captain Guy Fowles and Edward Marsden winning all four of their matches.

Next week's schools tennis fixtures are:

Under 15 Girls: The Mount v Bootham; Queen Ethelburga's v Pocklington; Queen Margaret's v St Peter's.

Under 13 Boys: Bootham v Joseph Rowntree; Pocklington v St Olave's.

Under 15 Boys: All Saints v Bootham; Joseph Rowntree v Pocklington.

The fixtures in the U13 Girls league for the May 7 week are: St Olave's v All Saints; Queen Margaret's v Pocklington; Queen Ethelburga's v The Mount.

The home team in each fixture is responsible for sending in a result sheet immediately to Miss E Hooley, Bootham School, York YO30 7BU.
