THIEVES got away with cigarettes and phone cards after raiding Walmgate Post Office today.

The culprits smashed the front windows of the shop in the early hours.

Postmaster Brian Flannagan, who was called to the shop at 5am by York police, said: "It could have been worse. At least none of my staff were present."

Despite the mess created by the attack, the shop opened as usual.

Brian added: "The annoying aspect to the attack is cleaning up the mess they leave behind. There's glass everywhere."

Anyone with information should contact York police on 01904 631321.
