PC Triffitt's simplistic thought that the temporary footpath closures, due to the foot and mouth outbreak, have contributed to a fall in rural crime (April 23) would be amusing were they not so insulting to the legions of law-abiding walkers and country-goers.
Does he really believe a "footpath-closed" sign puts such fear in the hearts of determined thieves and burglars that it deters them?
Rather than gratuitously affront outdoor enthusiasts and footpath-users he should congratulate them on their selfless observation of the present restrictions.
Come more normal times, a minority of landowners will welcome PC Triffitt's half-baked observation as justification for their continued cynical flouting of our access laws.
