A band member got an extra special birthday treat when his fellow musicians marched up his street and serenaded him.
Mike Pratt, who lives off St Swithin's Walk, in Holgate, York, celebrated his 40th birthday yesterday, and as a surprise the Nestl Rowntree Band, with which he plays, gave a rendition of the tune Blaze Away outside his home. Despite the pouring rain, Mike's family and neighbours, who were in on the surprise, turned up to listen to the band and wish him a happy birthday.
Mike is a solo euphonium player with the band and joined the group as they returned to their Haxby Road band room for their regular rehearsal.
He said: "I was totally shocked. I was just sat in my front room with my wife when I heard this thumping in the street.
"I thought it was some kids with a football, but when I looked out of the window I saw the band. It was a great surprise and it certainly took my mind off being 40!"
Members also presented Mike with an inscribed music stand. The band had double cause for celebration this week, after being informed that they have been promoted to the Championship Section of the national band league.
It is the first time in the band's 100-year history that they have achieved the status of the top section. And it's a first for the band's new musical director, Billy Rushworth.
He said: "Competing at the highest level demands hard work and commitment. It won't be easy but the musicians in the band have proved they can do it."
The band will be performing in Parliament Street on May 12.
