SUPERMARKET supremo Sir Ken Morrison has become a billionaire, while the boss of York-based CPP has a personal fortune of £250 million.

The Sunday Times Rich List 2001 is published tomorrow, and it gives the rundown on the wealthiest 1,000 people in Britain.

And a top ten on the richest in Yorkshire has a new entry at number seven in Hamish Ogston, owner of CPP Credit Protection Plan, which employs 750 people at its headquarters at Holgate Park.

He is listed as having a personal fortune of £250 million. Mr Ogston told the Evening Press that, while he did not live in Yorkshire, 99 per cent of his assets were here, and the figure quoted was "not out of this world".

Ken Morrison, who lives near Boroughbridge, is said to have a fortune of £1,150 million, compared to £810 million last year.

The list compilers say his fortune has risen on the back of rising share values in the supermarket chain.

Top of the list is Eddie Healey, with £1,250 million (£1,300 million last year).

The Shepherd family, of the York construction firm, come in at eighth place with £210 million (£200 million last year).

In the national retail stakes, discount clothing chain Matalan has made its founder, John Hargreaves, four times better off than a host of more exclusive retailers. The son of a Liverpool docker now has a £1,305 million fortune.
