A modern art collection which is quite literally a load of rubbish is stopping off in York as part of a national tour of car boot sales.
Wacky award-winning art duo Kirsten Lavers and Cris Cheek are bringing their bizarre brand of creativity to the York Racecourse car boot sale on Saturday, April 28.
The pair work under the name thingsnotworthkeeping and have put together a Not For Sale collection, which is made up of items that 1,000 members of the public nominated as not worth keeping.
Of those nominations, 100 were chosen for the exhibition by the artists and include an out of date car tax disc, one Barbie shoe, Thunderbirds pyjamas and a black skirt.
More thought-provoking items nominated as not worth keeping include a picture of the Royal Family, a portion of the Berlin Wall, a howitzer artillery shell and a Ringo Starr LP.
Said Kirsten: "We were interested in the thoughts and stories people have about personal objects they decided to be no longer worth keeping.
"This developed into a wider comment on cultural and social values at the end of the century, based not on objects with financial or sentimental value, but on what society decides to discard.
"After all, one person's scrap is another's pride and joy."
Cris added: "Car boot sales are the ideal venues for the tour. Every week items are discarded here, only to be purchased again and acquire new values.
"By becoming part of an arts presentation, items in our Not For Sale collection too attain a new value."
The pair were due to visit York in October last year but the catastrophic floods which left the racecourse under water meant the event had to be cancelled.
