SPRING is the time of year when many people's thoughts turn to moving to a new home.
The uncertainty of exchange and completion, wondering what the new neighbours will be like and even doubts about whether the move was a good idea after all can be brought to the fore by the arrival of the removal van.
City of York Trading Standards advises those on the move not to forget the importance of making full preparations for moving the contents of one house to another to minimise the stress of "moving day" and offers the following tips:
- Don't underestimate the amount of possessions your house contains and don't forget the contents of lofts, garages and sheds. If in doubt, ask the removal company of your choice to come to estimate the size of vehicle which will be needed
- What sort of service do you need? Cheap and cheerful, or a full service including wardrobe boxes, packing and unpacking and plans to show where each item is to be placed in your new home? Some firms will even plug in the TV and make the beds - but at a price
- Seek a number of estimates. Some people prefer to use established local firms or seek recommendations from friends and relatives.
The British Association of Removers can supply names of member furniture removers in any locality (and will try to resolve any complaints about member firms)
- Ask the remover if they will be providing a lorry or a van and how many men will be available on the day. Will they use dust sheets and gloves for upholstered furniture? How long do they estimate the move will take?
- Does your new home need any major renovation work? Is it smaller than your present home? If so, do you need to consider putting some furniture into storage for a while?
- Label everything clearly in advance so the removal firm knows exactly what is to remain and what is to be taken with you
- Flatten all packing paper thoroughly when unpacking - small items can easily be overlooked and thrown out with the rubbish
- Check the extent of insurance cover in the event of damage or breakages and point out any particularly delicate or valuable items.
Bon Voyage!
