The thumbprint of new coach Wayne Clark is clearly seen on the squad of 13 which Yorkshire have taken to Derby for the one day friendly matches against Derbyshire today and tomorrow.
Gavin Hamilton will open the innings for the first time and the party includes plenty of new blood in South African born left hander Michael Lumb, former Leicestershire second team batsman Scott Richardson, seamer Tom Baker and off-spinner Richard Dawson, who will soon be available full time after completing his exams at Exeter University.
The decision to take an early look at Dawson puts further pressure on Yorkshire's two other spinners, James Middlebrook and Ian Fisher, neither of whom have been included.
Matthew Hoggard is omitted today because of an England meeting but will play tomorrow when skipper David Byas will be missing because of a domestic engagement.
One of Clark's first suggestions upon joining Yorkshire was that Hamilton should be promoted to opener in one-day matches. He was given the job in three games on the pre-season tour of South Africa, and created a good impression, particularly in the Roses clash with Lancashire when he scored a half century.
Veteran wicket keeper Richard Blakey is chosen ahead of young Simon Guy but Byas stressed that the squad had been selected with one-day cricket in mind and there would probably be changes for next week's championship opener against Kent at Canterbury, starting on Wednesday.
Simon Widdup will then stand a good chance of going in first with Michael Vaughan but Richardson and 20-year-old Leeds-born Chris Taylor are also having their form closely watched.
Baker travelled to Derby ahead of other young rival pace men because he was injured for part of the time in South Africa and Yorkshire want to give him a further opportunity to shine.
Yorkshire (v Derbyshire) from: Vaughan, Hamilton, McGrath, Byas, Lumb, Fellows, Blakey, Dawson, Silverwood, Sidebottom, Hoggard, Baker, Richardson.
