Former England international Ray Adamson booted Selby to a Yorkshire Cup second round victory at Redcar last night.

He popped over a couple of penalties in the last ten minutes to pull off a great victory for the Yorkshire One side against a team from the division above them.

It was nail-biting stuff as Selby found themselves 6-0 down as Andy Dean kicked two penalties for Redcar early on. But prop Mark Tomlinson got Selby back in the game with an unconverted try before half-time and the men from Sandhill Lane nudged in front with a Carl Paterson penalty.

Redcar then recaptured the lead when hooker Martin Challenor forced his way over but Adamson's coolness under pressure saw Selby through to their third successive quarter-final in the 'Owd Tin Pot'.

Harrogate, fielding virtually a second string, crashed out 30-14 to Sandal at Claro Road.

'Gate have had no success in the competition since back-to-back wins in 1991 and 1992, and of their starting 15 last night only Craig Reed and loose head prop Rob Wilson were regular first teamers.

They managed to live with Sandal until five minutes before the break when a try and conversion by stand-off Mark Sales sent the visitors in 16-9 ahead.

Sales and opposite number Richard Windle had exchanged penalties three times in the opening minutes as the referee blew a concerto on the whistle and Harrogate almost managed to level things two minutes after the Sales try. But after a strong break by Darren Leachman his "scoring" pass to Mark Farrar was ruled forward.

After the break Farrar switched from wing to scrum-half, Matt Duncombe added pace and power in the centre and Harrogate looked a better side on attack.

But there were still huge holes in the midfield and Joncee Lockwood strolled through one for a try converted by Sales.

Then, after hooker Jon McNeish had been bundled into touch just short, full-back Keith Quigley launched a counter from the clearance kick, jinking and side-stepping clear to put Farrar over.

Windle missed the conversion and Harrogate missed several opportunities for another try by sloppy handling and wrong options before Ben Brindley made the game safe for Sandal. Sales again added the extras.

Wakefield beat Bradford and Bingley 18-15 and Morley won 44-14 at Cleckheaton in last night's other ties.

Tonight's second round games are: Old Brodleians v Otley, Sheffield v Doncaster, Middlesbrough v Hull, Halifax v Hull Ionians.
