Selby'S hopes of promotion to North East One are over after a 21-15 defeat in their final Yorkshire League game of the season at Pontefract.
They needed to win by 30 clear points to go into a play-off with Percy Park for a place in North Two East next season.
Selby set off like a train by building up a 10-0 lead inside the opening 15 minutes with a try by prop by Andy Pocklington, converted by Carl Paterson, who also kicked a penalty.
But Selby paid for their adventure and were caught on the break by an Appleyard try, converted by Boyd.
Selby hit back with a try from left-winger Dave Batty, but a Paterson pass was intercepted and Spears crossed for Pontefract, Boyd adding the extras.
Selby slowly lost momentum, particularly in the line-out, and the end of their challenge came when Boyd added another converted try for Pontefract.
