I was saddened by your front page article about the death of a young man on the A64 at Bilbrough Top (Evening Press, April 12).

I travel this road every day going to and from work. In my opinion, 60mph is more than enough on this stretch of road, and I would say that the area around Bilbrough Top, which has a difficult crossing in both east and west directions with cars and lorries going to the McDonalds restaurants, the Land Rover garage, the Travel Inn and so on, would benefit from a maximum speed of 50mph.

When driving on the A64, I am regularly passed by cars doing well in excess of 70mph. Not only cars pass me at these speeds but lorries and, would you believe, cars towing caravans!

Tonight on my journey home in the rush of holiday traffic, some caravans must have been travelling at 80mph. What chance have they to stop in an emergency if they encounter other vehicles trying to cross at Bilbrough Top?

I am aware of the future plans to alter this junction, but until that can happen, a speed restriction which is enforced must be the answer.
