MOTORCYCLISTS taking to North Yorkshire's roads over the Easter weekend were today urged to enjoy themselves, take it easy - and arrive alive.

North Yorkshire police are expecting a large number of riders to be on their machines this weekend - weather permitting - and will be out in force to ensure the casualties are kept to a minimum.

An operation was being launched today to target speeding and inconsiderate riders and car drivers on two notorious stretches of road in the county, and the force has now been given the go-ahead for an innovative plan to fast-track dangerous riders through the courts.

Those convicted of certain motoring offences could now lose their licences within just three weeks.

Superintendent David Short, the force's motorcycle safety expert, said: "The weather forecast looks good and there will be a lot of motorcyclists about, so this is a good opportunity to reinforce our message - ride safely and arrive alive."

Operation Abbey will see officers in both marked and unmarked vehicles out it strength on the A1257 Stokesley to Helmsley road and the A170 Helmsley to Thirsk road.

"We are looking to not only reduce casualties but also improve quality of life for residents and visitors," said Sergeant Chris Charlton.

Meanwhile in York, traffic officers on powerful off-road motorcycles will be actively targeting young motorcycle and moped thieves. Traffic Sergeant Dave Sutcliffe said the Easter school holidays were traditionally a period when there was an increase in this type of crime.

He said officers would be reacting to complaints from the public but also patrolling proactively.

"We know where a lot of bikes are stolen from and we will be out checking these areas," Sgt Sutcliffe added.
