Amazing support for York's flood victims from one of the world's poorest nations has sent an Easter message of incredible generosity, the Archbishop of York said today.
The Archbishop, Dr David Hope, was speaking as he prepared to accept a donation to his flood appeal from the people of Mozambique.
He said the gift of £40 has humbled all involved because it comes from a Third World nation which was itself devastated by floods last year.
He added: "The generosity of this gesture is absolutely extraordinary.
"I think this is a symbol of all that is good about humanity which sends out an extremely strong Easter message."
The cheque will be handed over by Vale of York MP Anne McIntosh on behalf of the National Assembly of Mozambique.
The MP's constituency was affected by the flooding in November.
She said: "I wish to express my immense gratitude to the people of Mozambique for helping to raise this money. For them, it is a huge amount."
A spokesman for Miss McIntosh said: "During their floods, Mozambique was sent a huge amount of money from Britain, and I think this money is sent in recognition of that.
"The sacrifice the people of Mozambique have made is huge considering the nation's poverty, and the fact that as many as 200,000 people were forced to abandon their homes during last year's flooding."
The Archbishop's fund now stands at about £70,000.
