ORIENTEER Matthew Speake tracked down a major trophy at the annual awards ceremony of the York and District Schools' Athletic Association.
The York College runner was presented with the Wilmott Trophy as the outstanding sixth-form sportsman in the York area.
Matthew has established himself at the top of his sport, representing Great Britain in the European Cup and home internationals.
A member of the British Under-21 squad, he finished second and sixth at the World Schools' Orienteering Championships in Israel.
He received his trophy from Evening Press Schools' sport correspondent Peter Wilmott, a life member and past president and secretary of the association.
Matthew's York team-mates who also competed in Israel, Tim Bean, Jonathan Kendall, Tom Van Rossum, Heather Gardner and Laura Lancaster, received special awards.
Clifton Without Junior School were awarded the T B Robinson Memorial Trophy as York's most successful school football team. They were crowned joint national champions in the Predator Cup Final at Old Trafford before Manchester United's Premiership game with Sunderland.
Yorkshire's only ever finalist, they won 20 of their 22 games last season to become joint national six-a-side champs.
Their line-up was Michael Warriner (captain), Tim Bolt, James Ellerby, Scott McCrorie, Mark Knott, Matthew Pallister - now all at Canon Lee - Liam Spencer and James Heslop.
The award of Association life membership went to Neal French, of Sherburn High School, for all his work, particularly to the cricket section.
Special awards were made to students from the York area who represented North Yorkshire in the National Millennium Youth Games Finals in Southampton.
Netball - Clare Gillick, Frances Nelson, Kelly Davidson, Kathryn Macmillan, Marion Willis, Kate Robinson, Emma Gill, Katherine Clegg, Nicola Bailey and Lorraine Waudby.
Rugby - Kelly Green, Hannah Dale, Cassie Smith, Suzie Heath, Makala Green, Danielle Lee, Nicola Trotter, Saskia Bradbury and Claire Owen.
Tennis - Jennifer Coates, Luke Pollard, Jessica Frances, Katie Milne, Simon Jaynes and Jason Watson.
Basketball - Jack Aaron, Mark Flintoft, Steve James, Simon Fidler, John Igoe, Lawrence Smith, Paul Walker, Matthew Roswsell and David Whiting.
Colours were presented by the Lord mayor of York, Coun Shan Braund and the Sheriff of York, Coun Barrie Ferguson.
Life member and past president Roger Jackson gave the vote of thanks.
