NORTH Yorkshire fire brigade's contribution to the battle against the floods cannot be overstated. Officers worked around the clock in appalling conditions to rescue residents, reinforce defences and pump floodwater out of properties. In York, they were doing this while their own fire station was under water.
Theirs was a truly heroic effort. The commendation presented to the fire service from local councils is a thank-you from everyone in North Yorkshire.
Meanwhile, the service has won Investors In People status. This award should help draw a line under the controversy caused by criticisms in an unpublished Fire Service Inspectorate's report.
