Q. I would love to be an exercise teacher. Could you tell me how I should go about it?

A. This is a question I am often asked. The accepted qualification for an exercise to music teacher is the RSA certificate. Your aerobics teacher should have this qualification.

This provides the basis for your career development. You may then wish to take other specialist qualifications to teach pre/post natal classes, or to teach exercise classes for older people.

Courses for teaching step classes, circuits or aquafit are also available.

Fitness is a young and growing industry. Opportunities for instructors are available if you are determined.

Pay structures in the North are not fantastic, you would need to teach 25 classes a week to make the national average wage. Move down south and the pay is better... but who would want to?

You won't get rich, but you'll have a lot of fun trying and many instructors move easily into other sections of the industry or into personal training.

York Training Centre, a division of The City Of York Council, will be running an RSA Exercise to Music course starting from Thursday.

The course takes one day a week, runs for 15 weeks and can be taken as an NVQ option.
