LAST night I cycled home behind a cyclist who had three very bright rear lights, a bright yellow fluorescent jacket and a helmet. It made me think about all the cyclists who do not get mentioned in your letters pages, who not only obey the law but go beyond it, with extra lights and safety equipment.
AP Cox, who wrote that police should prosecute cyclists rather than speeding motorists (February 6), may be interested in some statistics. Apparently 68 per cent of motorists break the speed limit, but less than 0.01 per cent of speeding motorists are prosecuted.
It has also been calculated that crashes caused by excessive speed cost the UK £1.8 billion a year, plus a huge amount of suffering. I admit that there are some irresponsible cyclists but I still think the police have their priorities right in concentrating on law-breaking motorists.
I doubt errant cyclists could cause as much mayhem as speeding car drivers.
