IN York Crown Court the defendant is ordered to stand. "Mr Bloggs, you have been convicted of the crime of credit card fraud. This is a serious offence, and you have been fined £1,000. How would you like to pay?"
"American Express?"
"That'll do nicely."
This unlikely scenario is one that could soon be played out for real.
Bravely entering the 20th century, the North Yorkshire courts now allow criminals to put their debt to society on plastic.
We await with some anticipation further reforms.
