It is not every day that the residents of modern York get to see a procession of Roman legionaries - walking to the bus stop.

But that was exactly what people in Acomb saw today when a group of young soldiers from Our Lady's RC Primary School caught a ride so they could keep an appointment for an invasion at the Yorkshire Museum.

The group of about 60 Year Three and Four pupils and teachers from the school stepped back in time dressed in classical costume as part of their history studies, focusing on the Roman period.

The group all made their costumes at home as part of the project and compared them with the real thing when they visited the museum's Roman galleries.
