The twin towns of Malton and Norton are on the way up, according to a survey carried out by business leaders.

The review, by the local Town Centre Initiative, found that over 50 shops in Malton and Norton had their shop fronts redecorated or refitted during 2000.

The news has been welcomed by town leaders as a sign that both towns, which were thought to be under an economic strain, are recovering. Roddy Bushell, Town Centre Initiative member and manager of the Fitzwilliam Estate, which owns many buildings in the twin towns, said of all areas in both towns, Yorkersgate in Malton had experienced the most impressive turnaround.

"Previously seen as the street with too many buildings needing care and attention, recent months have seen 12 properties refurbished," said Mr Bushell.

"All that remains for Yorkersgate is the refurbishment of the Assembly Rooms, Travis Perkins and York House and the street will be complete.

"We should recognise that retailers are now taking positive steps to help make the towns look increasingly attractive to shoppers."

Margaret Taylor, Mayor of Norton, welcomed the news, adding that there had been a noticeable difference in the town.

"The shops certainly look a lot smarter than they used to," she said.
