YORK fencer Duncan Smart has clinched a place in the Yorkshire epee team just three years after taking up the sport.
He won a coveted county spot after finishing third in the Yorkshire Regional Epee Championship at Harrogate.
The 33-year-old from Acomb sailed through the preliminaries and did well against the county's better fencers with his well-timed counter-attacks.
His York Fencing Club colleague Martin Williams, a 28-year-old stockbroker, finished second in the Merlin League Challenge Cup - an epee poule unique competition - at York.
Another York fencer, Dr Elaine Richards, was second in the ladies foil category.
YFC's beginners classes continue at Archbishop Holgate School on Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm.
