AMOTHERBY
WE are well into our winter programme, with weekly meetings being held on Monday evenings in the club rooms, behind the village hall at Hovingham, at 7.30pm. On January 15, members met at the studio of Minster FM and were treated to a tour of the studio. January 22 took the form of a business meeting, when members discussed issues such a fund-raising, the annual supper dance, correspondence from county office, etc. On January 29, there was a trip to the pantomime at York.
A ploughing match will be held on February 4, commencing at 10am, in a field at the Coneysthorpe/Castle Howard crossroads, by kind permission of Castle Howard Estate and CWS. This is an open ploughing match; further information is available from Andrew Wilson on (0411) 610765, or Bruce on (01653) 628567.
HELMSLEY
ON Sunday, on a glorious winter day, we held our annual ploughing match on land kindly loaned to us by Mr F Mallory, just outside Helmsley. We had a good turnout of 46 ploughmen from as far away as Tadcaster and Darlington as well as many locals and our younger members. We would like to thank Cundalls, BATA, Boulton & Cooper, HW & JE Carter Motors, Duncombe Sawmills, Masons Engineering, Brian Otterburn and Edwin Bowes for their kind sponsorship, and our judges, Mr F Flintoft, Mr B Duck, Mr P Monkman and Mr C Leckonby. We managed to raise £126 for the club.
The results (in order of finish) are as follows: reversible, M Harper, S Garbutt, B Wilson; open conventional, R Wood, A Wilson, S Wood; vintage mounted, C Grice, R Ingham, P Scruton; vintage trailer, R Alderson, J T Swales, J R Weighell; match plough, G Thompson, R Garbutt; Helmsley Senior YFC Cup, W Barr, R Arrand, Nuffy Teasdale; Helmsley junior YFC Cup, W Hawkins, T Sayer, E Blizzard.
We met on January 29 at the schoolrooms to get our entries entered for the Ryedale District Rally which is taking place on the April 28. We had a good turnout and had no problem filling in the entries with many keen members now in our club. If you would like to join us then please contact Andrew Carter on( 01439) 798282.
