RESIDENTS First is a simple but brilliant idea. It allows York's citizens to sample the attractions that lure countless tourists here every year. It boosts the attractions' visitor numbers on a quiet January weekend and encourages more trade through word-of-mouth recommendation.
This year's Residents First took place for the most part in bright sunshine. It was the perfect antidote to last year's floods. The numbers who took advantage of free admission, and the weekend's carnival atmosphere, prove the tourist sector is back in business after a devastating end to 2000. Organisers and the attractions of Residents First deserve great credit.
