THE City of York Tennis Championships are to return to their old date in July this year and a further change decided after a meeting of the championship committee sees the event switched to York University.

The championships were played in Rowntree Park from the 1920s to 1997 and were then switched to the university for a year, but for the last two years the event has been shared by the York and Poppleton clubs, with the finals at York Tennis Club's headquarters, at Clifton Park, in September.

The decision to go back to the university was taken as all the courts there are of the same surface and are floodlit.

Margaret Whitehead, a leading player in the city for many years, has been appointed referee for the first time when the championships are held from July 14 - 21.
