ARCHAEOLOGISTS struck it lucky twice in one day when builders uncovered ancient human remains just after rail workers found a Roman skull at York Station.
York Archaeological Trust was called out first to deal with the discovery of a Roman woman's skull as welders worked on Platform One.
Then it was called to Knavesmire Manor Hotel, Tadcaster Road, after builders digging out foundations unearthed leg and jaw bones.
Both discoveries had to be checked by police before they could be ruled out as crime scenes.
Martin Stockwell, senior field officer for York Archaeological Trust, said many finds were made when the station was built in the 19th century and the skull was linked with the burial site at the Royal York Hotel, excavated by Channel 4's Time Team last year. It stretches along Tadcaster Road
