The body of a man found in a block of flats in York may have been there since Christmas, police said today.
Officers made the grisly discovery yesterday evening after being alerted by City of York Council.
Three officers were called to the council flats at Helmsley House, in The Groves area of the city, at 6pm.
They entered the flat and found the partly-decomposed body of an elderly man. Sgt Dave Willey, of York police, said it appeared the man had been dead for about a month. Police said early indications were that the death was due to natural causes.
Neighbours expressed sadness at the news today. One said: "You would have thought someone would have wondered where he had got to after so long, poor man."
A City of York Council spokeswoman said: "Council wardens alerted police yesterday after they became concerned about the man, and officers broke down the flat door. I believe it is an elderly man who lives by himself."
